Recent US Volcano Observatory Activity Reports

AVO Great Sitkin ORANGE/WATCH - Slow eruption of lava, accompanied by small earthquakes, continues.

Nov 20, 2024 20:56 - Lava continues to erupt slowly at Great Sitkin Volcano, and small earthquakes associated with this ongoing eruption continue at a low rate. No unusual activity was seen in partly cloudy web camera and satellite views of the volcano over the past day.The current eruption of Great Sitkin Volcano began with a single explosive event in May 2021. The ongoing eruption of lava at the summit began shortly afterward, in July 2021. The volcano is monitored using local seismic and infrasound sensors, satellite data and web cameras, and regional infrasound and lightning networks.

AVO Spurr YELLOW/ADVISORY - Unrest continues with elevated seismicity.

Nov 20, 2024 20:56 - Unrest continues at Mount Spurr. Small, shallow earthquakes underneath the summit region continue at a low rate. No activity was observed in satellite and web camera images over the past day. AVO continues to closely monitor activity at Mount Spurr for signals that would indicate that the volcano is moving closer to an eruption. Based on previous eruptions, changes from current activity in the earthquakes, ground deformation, summit lake, and fumaroles would be expected if magma began to move closer to the surface. Therefore, it is very likely that if an eruption were to ...

NMI Ahyi Seamount YELLOW/ADVISORY - Plume of discolored water and possible floating pumice; Aviation Color Code and Volcano Alert Level raised to YELLOW and ADVISORY..

Nov 19, 2024 23:43 - Definitive signs of unrest at Ahyi Seamount have been observed sporadically in satellite data over the past few weeks. Plumes of discolored water were observed drifting up to several hundred yards (meters) away from the volcano in satellite images on November 1, 10, and 19. A retrospective analysis of older satellite data shows weak activity extending back to August 5, 2024. Some of these satellite images, including the most recent one, show what might be pumice floating on the ocean surface. Nothing significant has been detected from the direction of Ahyi Seamount in ...

HVO Kilauea YELLOW/ADVISORY - Kīlauea volcano is not erupting. Activity on Kīlauea remains low.

Nov 19, 2024 20:03 - Activity Summary: Kīlauea volcano is not erupting. Seismicity and ground deformation at the volcano’s summit, East Rift Zone, and Southwest Rift Zone are low.Summit Observations:  Earthquake activity at Kīlauea's summit region remained low over the past week, with 14 earthquakes magnitude-2.2 or smaller. The tiltmeter at Uēkahuna, northwest of Kaluapele, the summit caldera, remained relatively flat with no significant changes over the past week. The tiltmeter at Sand Hill, southwest of Kaluapele, remained relatively flat with no significant changes over the past ...

AVO Katmai GREEN/NORMAL - Resuspended ash observed from 1912 eruption. Aviation color code and alert level remain at GREEN/NORMAL.

Nov 18, 2024 08:09 - Strong northwesterly winds in the vicinity of Katmai and the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes have picked up loose volcanic ash erupted during the 1912 Novarupta-Katmai eruption and are carrying it to the southeast. The National Weather Service has issued a SIGMET for this low-level event and suggests that the maximum cloud height is 6,000 ft (1.8 km) above sea level. This phenomenon is not the result of recent volcanic activity and occurs during times of high winds and dry snow-free conditions in the Katmai area and other young volcanic areas of Alaska. No eruption is in ...

CVO Cascade Range GREEN/NORMAL - All volcanoes are at normal levels.

Nov 15, 2024 19:59 - Activity Update: All volcanoes in the Cascade Range of Oregon and Washington are at normal background activity levels. These include Mount Baker, Glacier Peak, Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Adams in Washington State and Mount Hood, Mount Jefferson, Three Sisters, Newberry, and Crater Lake in Oregon.Past Week Observations: During the past week, small earthquakes were detected at Mount St. Helens, Mount Rainier, and Mount Adams. All monitoring data are consistent with background activity levels in the Cascade Range.

HVO Ofu-Olosega GREEN/NORMAL - No activity of concern for Ofu-Olosega.

Nov 7, 2024 21:24 - No significant activity was detected at Ofu-Olosega Volcano during the past month. The USGS National Earthquake Information Center reported no earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or greater in the vicinity of the volcano.

HVO Ta'u Island GREEN/NORMAL - No activity of concern for Taʻū Island

Nov 7, 2024 21:24 - No significant activity was detected at Taʻū Volcano during the past month. The USGS National Earthquake Information Center reported no earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or greater in the vicinity of the volcano. Global Positioning System (GPS) instrument on Taʻū Island recorded no significant vertical deformation.

HVO Tutuila Island GREEN/NORMAL - No activity of concern for Tutuila Island

Nov 7, 2024 21:24 - No significant activity was detected at Tutuila Volcano during the past month. The USGS National Earthquake Information Center reported no earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or greater in the vicinity of the volcano.

HVO Mauna Loa GREEN/NORMAL - No significant changes at Mauna Loa in the past month; slow inflation of the summit continues.

Nov 7, 2024 21:07 - Seismicity beneath Mauna Loa's summit and upper-elevation flanks has been low over the past month; approximately 61 small-magnitude earthquakes (most below M1.5) were detected, which is expected for the post-eruption phase of this volcano. There were approximately 5 earthquakes deeper than 10 km (8 mi).Data from Global Positioning System (GPS) instruments on Mauna Loa showed no change near the summit as the volcano recovers from the 2022 eruption, and magma replenishes the reservoir system. Gas and temperature data from a station on Mauna Loa's Southwest Rift Zone show ...

HVO Kama'ehuakanaloa UNASSIGNED/UNASSIGNED - No activity of concern for Kamaʻehuakanaloa.

Nov 7, 2024 21:07 - Seismicity was elevated in the past month reflecting an earthquake swarm beginning on Nov. 1, 2024 at Kamaʻehuakanaloa volcano (formerly Lōʻihi Seamount). There have been 110 earthquakes since the start of this swarm with activity appearing to wane on Nov. 5, 2024; 48 earthquakes within the swarm were greater than magnitude 2 and 1 event was greater than magnitude 4. The largest earthquake to occur was a magnitude 4.3 at 12:05pm HST on Nov. 2, at a depth of 5.8 km (3.6 mi) below sea level. The source of this seismicity is likely related to magma migration beneath ...

YVO Yellowstone GREEN/NORMAL - YVO Monthly Update: background seismicity and deformation

Nov 1, 2024 15:11 - SummaryYellowstone Caldera activity remains at background levels, with 70 located earthquakes in October (maximum = M2.0). Deformation measurements indicate a resumption of subsidence after the seasonal pause that occurs every summer due to snowmelt and groundwater conditions. Recent Work and NewsSteamboat Geyser erupted on October 7, the 5th major eruption of the year. Since that time, the geyser has not experienced significant minor activity, indicating that the next major eruption is at least many weeks, and perhaps months, away.Yellowstone Volcano Observatory ...
